Beautiful Me Workshop

RS

On April 19, The Rising Stars Youth Foundation teamed up with The Hance Family Foundation to provide a free workshop for over 60 female student – athletes aged 10- 17. The workshop was designed to promote self-awareness and empower young women. At the start of the evening, when asked how they defined “beauty”, the majority of girls rattled off a list of celebrities. By the end of the 90 minute program, all the girls were identifying the “beautiful” things about themselves as well as filling the heart-shaped boxes they made, with compliment notes for their peers. Over 60 beautiful smiles lit up the room.  The “Beautiful Me” program was designed to be the antidote to the grim statistics of teen girls associated with eating disorders, substance abuse, and depression. Rising Stars couldn’t be more proud of all the wonderful girls who participated and know that they will spread the message of resilience and teamwork in their schools and sports teams.

On Monday, April 11, 2016, Rising Stars Scholars volunteered in the sixth annual Long Island Lutheran High School Food Drive on their Brookville, NY campus. Rising Stars student athletes helped pack over 300,000 food packets in order to feed 500 children both locally and globally every day for one year. The meals we helped pack are nutritionally balanced to prevent malnutrition. The following quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reflects the spirit of the efforts of the Rising Stars student volunteers showing that kids can make a difference in the world.

“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”~Martin Luther King, Jr.
